How a Catastrophic Flood Led to an Unexpected Business

Today you’ll read the story of Jeanie Lynch, who joined the Life on Your Own Terms team in September 2017.

How a Catastrophic Flood Led to an Unexpected Business

My husband and I have been married almost 25 years, and for 21 of those years, he was in the military. We have 3 daughters, and I’ve always stayed at home in order to be there for them as they grew up. Over the years, I’ve had various small businesses to help add to our family’s income. I used to make children’s clothing and sell them on Etsy, and I’ve also had a monogram business.

Living Through a Catastrophic Flood

How a Catastrophic Flood Led to an Unexpected Business

But all of that changed in August 2016, when catastrophic flooding hit Louisiana. We had never experienced flooding before, and suddenly we had 3 feet of water in our home. Our lives were turned upside down, just like the other 14 houses on our street.

Luckily, we did not lose everything like some of the people in our community. But we did have to move out with our 3 daughters until the flooding was over and our house could be livable again. It was a very challenging time as a family and community.

My husband and I worked hard to repair the damage in our home, and as soon as we had a bed, toilet, and coffee maker, I was ready to move back in! Thankfully, over time, life returned to “normal,” and we decided to take a big trip to celebrate my daughter’s high school graduation.

How a Catastrophic Flood Led to an Unexpected Business - Jeanie's FamilyWe went with a few other families, and I met Tammy on that trip. Tammy didn’t mention her business to me at that time, but a few months later, we got together for lunch. She shared that she partnered with a U.S. based manufacturer of household products, and I was intrigued.

I was a bit familiar with the company because, as an act of incredible goodwill, that same company donated thousands of dollars of cleaning products to Louisiana residents who were impacted by the flood. I was one of those recipients, so I knew the products worked great. But I had no idea that there were also vitamins, fitness products, and much more. I decided right away that I wanted to shop for these products.

The Blessings of an Unexpected Business

Once I saw that there was a referral business attached, I saw it as a way to earn income for my family! After the flood, I had started cleaning homes to earn extra income, so this business just made sense. But I also knew I would want to refer my friends and family to this wonderful online store anyway…. So why not earn income at the same time!

I love that this gives me the option to help support my family without having to buy inventory and supplies, like with my clothing business in the past.

Plus, the vitamins made a difference for me so quickly that I couldn’t help but share with others. I used to take ibuprofen for weeks at a time because I work out a lot, and my knee was frequently in a lot of pain. Now, I rarely take ibuprofen and I feel great!

I hit the ground running and advanced quickly, even though I have no background in any kind of direct sales or referral marketing business. It’s easy to refer people because I now have a great product line and an incredible company behind me.

The extra income from this business is helping us pay for Christmas this year, as well as save money instead of living paycheck to paycheck. At the same time, I’m helping other people live healthier and save money on their household budget since these products are priced LOWER than the competition.

A friend of mine at the gym came up and thanked me for introducing her to the supplements because her stomach is no longer bothering her. In addition, I’m helping others earn an income, and it feels so great to be a part of this!

I’m grateful that God brought Tammy into my life at just the right time. The products and the referral business have been a blessing to me and my family, especially after the difficulty of living through the flood. I’m just getting started, and looking forward to helping many more people in the future!
