Today you’ll read a story of one our team members, Terry Hess. Terry and her husband Robert have been a part of our team for over 13 years, and you’ll learn how their daughter’s health crisis led to unexpected solutions and a different kind of life for their family.
The Solution to a Health Crisis
13 years ago, my daughter was dealing with a significant health challenge. She had been experiencing a migraine headache which lasted over a year and a half. We went from doctor to doctor, specialist to specialist, yet no one could give us any answers or solutions. Finally, we visited a wellness doctor who did blood tests that were different than the traditional ones we had already tried.
He told us that our daughter had elevated levels of pesticides and toxins in her blood and that it was probably related to the products we had been using in and around our home for years. This was a shock to me – I had no idea!
The solution? Eliminate the toxins from our home by starting to use natural and toxin-free cleaning and personal care products.
I began the search for these types of products, and the first place I went was the health food store. Some of the products worked, but they were expensive and didn’t smell very good. Other ones didn’t work at all. We were desperate to find relief for our daughter.
A friend of mine mentioned that she had heard of a company that has safer products, so my husband and I decided to check it out. We took a couple friends with us, and we drove over 2 hours away to learn more about this company and product line.
When we saw the information about the company and the products, it made complete sense to us. We got a starter pack, and within 2 weeks, our daughter’s migraine headache was gone. The change was phenomenal, and we couldn’t keep it to ourselves. We started sharing about the products with our friends and family because we saw the health benefits firsthand.
The Solution to a Financial Challenge
My degree is in architecture, but when my son was born, I wanted to stay at home with him. But since I was giving up my income as an architect, I needed to earn some income in order to do so. I joined a direct sales company, and I stayed with that company for 19 years.
I rose quickly through the ranks, earning all kinds of trips, jewelry, and cars. I earned a lot of money, too, but much of it had to be reinvested into inventory, supplies, and team meetings.
When I was introduced to the Life on Your Own Terms team, I was not looking for a different business. I was simply excited to find a solution to my daughter’s health crisis. But once I started seeing the health benefits, I investigated the compensation plan a little more closely. And as I began sharing with others, I started receiving paychecks. Except that this time, I didn’t have to buy inventory, catalogs, sort products, deliver orders, or spend 2-2.5 hours doing a show.
Not only that, within 6 months of working with the Life on Your Own Terms team, I doubled the income that I had been making in my other company–which I had been working at for 19 years!

A Different Kind of Life
My life is very different than it was 13 years ago. Both of my children are grown and living on their own, though we still love spending time together. Thankfully, my daughter no longer has to suffer from the constant pain of a migraine headache.
My husband and I are able to enjoy time freedom like we never had before. We both work from home, and since this business requires much less time investment than my previous one, I’m able to enjoy some of my hobbies such as gardening, working out, and designing our home.
When my father-in-law became ill, we were able to open our home to him and provide care for him. Without this business, I would not have been able to do so. I’m grateful that we have the time and financial resources to dedicate to supporting him.
In addition, my daughter is about to get married, and I’m able to see her regularly and be a part of the process. My son has 2 children, and we live nearby, which means I get to enjoy being a grandmother and spend time with them on a consistent basis.
My Advice for Those Looking to Work from Home
For anyone looking to work from home, I recommend that they investigate the entire company and compensation plan – not just one part of it. A lot of companies look and feel really fun in the beginning, but in the long run, don’t give the results you are looking for. Make sure that you look for something that is not a fad, that is stable, and that the products appeal to the average person.
Many times someone is doing all the right things, but they aren’t successful or reaching their goals because they are just not in the right business “vehicle”. This business model is the best vehicle I have seen for anyone who wants flexibility and to have life on their own terms.
Lastly, don’t be afraid to start. A lot of people are afraid to try something new. But if you are coachable, you get to work and don’t procrastinate, you’ll be amazed at how much you can accomplish. If you don’t, you will always look back and wonder, “What if I had started then?”
Terry and her husband Robert are both architects by trade and reside in North Carolina. They have 2 grown children and 2 grandchildren. Terry is on the board of directors at her local Chamber of Commerce, and she spends her free time gardening, exercising, and using her architecture degree to design her own home.
